Since coming to the world of Arcadia to raise her baby griffin, Taryn MacTavish has had to overcome a lot of difficulties, but she’s finally beginning to feel welcome. She’s settled into her small camp in the Valley of Hoof and Horn, she’s earned the trust (and perhaps more) of the Cerosan lord who rules it, she’s been adopted by the mystical Morathi of kraal-Rucombe, and best of all, she’s made friends with the lonely magus who lives by the lake nearby…but her new friend is not what he seems. The mysterious man who has such an eerie, unshakeable grip on her thoughts is no man at all, but a merciless and ancient evil that hungers for her mind and lusts for her flesh.
THE WIZARD IN THE WOODS is the second exciting chapter of R. Lee Smith’s ground-breaking erotic series, Lords of Arcadia. Enter a dark world of fantasy and desire in a compelling story of good and evil as told by a master storyteller.

The Wizard in the Woods Lords of Arcadia Book 2 edition by R Lee Smith Literature Fiction eBooks
An author who can make me lose track of time in books is one to be cherished. I found Book 1 (Care and Feeding of Griffins) to be highly original and I couldn't put it down... (Sadly I found this book on a Sunday night and couldn't stop reading it until I'd finished in the early hours of the morning. Work... was a little painful the next day). I ended up buying all the other books of the series and have just finished Book 2.So why the 3 stars? Character development. I'm sorry to say that after such a promising start to the series, our ever-so sweet, innocent and adoring heroine has turned out to have a full blown, fatal case of the Mary-Sues. I'm going to try and finish this series, but it's starting to irk me so much that I've had to put it aside for a bit.
*** BEWARE! SPOILERS BE HERE ***
R. Lee Smith, you have quite the talent as a wordsmith, but by god you can also create some truly asinine lead characters. By Book 2 poor Taryn is only able to solve problems with her legs spread. No other female is as sexy, kind, innocent and amazing as she is. Any female character that comes close to being near to Taryn's age/attractiveness has something wrong with her, from pants on head stupidity (the F-Arkes, anyone?), to being mindless violent killing machines. Taryn has no friends, she has men who want to bed her, or older women who want to mother her (the only 'strong' female other than Taryn is carefully kept a non-sexual being thus not competition for Taryn).
The rape sex scenes at first were a great focal point to understanding the world and the brutal history of its people, but after multiple rapes, it gets rather tiresome. And this is from a reader appreciates a well written non-consent/reluctance theme. Yes we get it, the bad guy is bad, and obsessed with our feisty sex kitten (as with apparently everyone else in the world), and he must have her, at the expense of his own health, power and life, despite the fact that all these things are the main motivator behind his interest in her.
I mean, this guy annihilates a city, forces an entire species to evacuate the area, commits atrocity after atrocity.. and he's fine to stay in his own hut in the woods as long as he's quiet, but he goes after Taryn and he's now Public Enemy No.1 and must be taken out at all costs?
Don't even get me started on the "good" guy, who is apparently only good at manipulating people and things behind the scene so he keeps Taryn in the dark - the WHY behind this is frustratingly unclear.
I'm still hanging in there, because despite all the grating flaws I do enjoy the author's imagination. This could be something great if the writing and plot wasn't so indulgent and was sharpened up a bit.

The Wizard in the Woods Lords of Arcadia Book 2 edition by R Lee Smith Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
First book is The Care and feeding of a Griffin
Rad them in order. They are a wonderful/scary adventure. R. Lee Smith is a magical writer who spins fabulous tales that are almost poetry.
Adult themes with mythological creatures and a heroine who makes me want to change my own world for the better.
After the first book, I was interested to learn more about Arcadia and the many populations of creatures there. Mostly I learned that they all like to have sex with the main character. It seems that Taryn uses sex as a way to solve problems, soothe conflict, hell just to change the subject. I'm not prudish, but was hoping for more than just a sexual tour of the land. I won't be moving on to the next in the series. At least the writing itself was fair and the grammar wasn't distracting.
Got the second book right after the first as I couldn't wait to see how it all turned out with Antilles and how Taryn would escape the clutches of the wizard. Was definitely not disappointed. A few typos here and there with missing words but not enough to detract from the story as whole. In the middle of book 3 now.
I loved it! I kept staying up to finish reading it and I'm amazed! This book is one of a series of four, and is excellent. It is an amazing fairy tale adventure with a dark erotic twist! R. Lee Smith always manages to surprise me, coming up with great plots, twists and turns that intrigue and fascinate! This is another fine example of this author's writing, provocative, well written, erotic, often dark and suspenseful to the last page. I honestly can't wait for R. Lee Smith's next work! 5 stars!
Was this book as good as the first one? Not quite, but definitely still a great read. The focus here shifts from the excellent world building in the first book to a more sex-focused adventure. I'm not at all against erotica or sexual exploration, but after being burned by the Anita Blake books (all men want the heroine and she's not going to turn any of them away) I had a few qualms about the sex scenes in this book. This did not make the book a bad book by any means, it just lost a little of the verve that held me enthralled in the first one. This is a very well written book (although I do wish someone could go in and edit out the word "lathe" to be replaced with "lave"!)I still loved reading it and still highly recommend this series. Great characters, great fantasy world with enough real grit to make it feel genuine, great villain. I will be reading everything by this author and waiting for more to come out.
On par with RA Salvatore, Terry Brooks, George RR Marting and Robert Jordan. I haven't been this charmed by a book in years. It is primarily a work of fantasy fiction...a stellar example of the genre. Add in a powerful erotic touch and you have a "paranormal erotic romance" story. R Lee Smith is an incredible talent, one I hope we see much more of. I think she is completely capable of breaking into a mainstream genre if she so chose. Me? I'm glad she's right where is. At least for now.
This second installment of the Lords of Arcadia series is even better than the first one, which I also gave 5 stars. Wherever Taryn was in Arcadia, I was there with her. Too many emotions to count. The many erotic scenes were incredibly well written...some terrifying, some filled with such love as to take your breath away.
Excerpt "He did not move to interrupt her, no, not even though his blood burned and loins ached. She moved for him in sacred ways it seemed no eyes but his had or could ever see, and to stop her, even with his embrace, was surely profane to the gods that had made her. So he watched, letting his eyes caress the poetry of her body, a touch so intimate only the firelight and shadows could share it."
Can't say enough good things about this book. Read the first two in 2.5 days. Taking a break, then starting on the third The Roads of Taryn MacTavish. Fourth in the series is The Army of Mab. Hope these next two are as good as the first two.
