Excerpt from A Short History of the Confederate States of America
The Vindication of the Southern States for their Ordi nances of Secession in 1861 involves two considerations namely their rightful power to withdraw from the Union into which they had entered by voluntary compact and the causes that justified the exercise of that power.
In treating this question in its twofold aspect, the legal and the moral, it is not intended to vex the weary ear by adducing time-worn arguments; but, believing the case to be one which must be adjusted finally by historical facts, the candid reader is asked, Without favor or prejudice, to make a decision on the unquestionable record.

I understand why this book is now almost unread, as Jefferson Davis is for mostly seen as either evil incarnate or a buffoon. He is anything but.The first four chapters in this book, up to page 81 on the original edition, provides an alternative history of the period from colonial times, the writing of the Federal Constitution, the political conflicts between slave and free states, to the election of Abraham Lincoln and the run-up to the beginning of the Civil War. As a northern liberal, I would never have read this myself, if not for my wanting to use the caricature of Davis for an essay. The exploration of historiography of this period is a book in itself as the remaining chapters segue into military history.
I recommend this book strongly, as Davis gives a detailed and cogent argument that provides a different narrative to the complex precursors to the conflagration the war that is really only a single chapter of the story of the slave culture in America, which must include the simplification of the Lincoln hagiography. This is a scholarly, incisive book by the man who was at the center of the movement. I would hope that history as taught in our major universities is able to include this book, and I'm troubled that this may not be the case.

A Short History of the Confederate States of America Classic Reprint Jefferson Davis 9781330333082 Books Reviews
No fake history or misrepresentation of the actual reason for the war
I have the kindle version and wanted a hard copy.
Chapters and pages out of sequence.
Thanks to digital publishing, readers with an interest in history are able to read for ourselves what the principal actors in an event actually had to say for themselves. My congratulations to the publisher for making this volume available, where before it would have been buried on a library shelf somewhere.
Very nice to hear a first hand account of the Civil War from the Confederate point of view. I was stunningly surprised at the states rights issue and how the union marched into the state of Missouri and confiscated all the weapons from the citizens. War had not even been declared at that point. Something to think about.
I used this book as a primary source years ago and couldn't track it down at all
i'm glad that i did. if you pair this with Davis's other work "Rise and fall of the confederate states of america" (both volumes) you have a good histroy (although realize it is told from a certain point of view) of the southern confederacy
In what proved to be one of the final published works by Jefferson Davis in his life, his "Short History" is anything but short - it is a lengthy writing that aims to exonerate his cause and provide an understanding from a Constitutional perspective. The work itself comes in the form of a textbook-style layout, similar to those at schools. Although wordy at times, Davis speaks like a lawyer about his case and presents an argument that retains much of the Jeffersonian democratic ideals he claimed to preserve as head of the Confederate experiment during the 1860's. This work presents Davis' ideology in a fluid form, ready for interpretation by any serious student of the Civil War or Constitutional studies.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book; a view of the war from a Southern perspective. There are hundreds of book from the Northern perspective, versus this little gem, a concise, mind-opening book by the man who led and lived the Civil War.
